Severe Spring Weather Tips

3/19/2019 (Permalink)

While spring brings the promise of warm weather and longer days, it also brings a variety of conditions that can include heavy rains and severe weather, which can increase your flood risk. Take action to protect yourself, your family, and your business—before a weather event occurs and it’s too late.

April marks the start of the rainy season. Spring storms can bring several inches of rain in only a matter of hours or there can be consistent rainfall for days. These heavy rains can lead to severe flooding by over-saturating the ground, overfilling storm drains, or rivers spilling over their banks.

As one of the most common hazards in the United States, it’s important we prepare for the potential disaster that flooding can cause. Even if you feel you live in a community with a low risk of flooding, remember that anywhere it rains, it can flood. Just because you haven’t experienced a flood in the past, doesn’t mean you won’t in the future.

In order help prepare you for the possibility of a flood, we offer you these tips:

  • Build an emergency kit and make a family communications plan
  • Avoid building in a floodplain unless you elevate and reinforce your home
  • Elevate the furnace, water heater and electric panel in your home if you live in an area that has a high flood risk
  • Install check-valves to prevent flood water from backing up into the drains of your home
  • Seal basement walls and floor with waterproofing compounds to prevent seepage through cracks
  • Always keep your gutters and downspouts clean to allow water to flow freely
  • Prepare a flood evacuation plan
  • Know how to safely shut-off utilities
  • Keep insurance and vital records in a water-proof box
  • Have a portable radio to listen for important current information

When your home sustains water damage from flooding, you should call SERVPRO of Eastern Niagara County immediately. Our professionals have the expertise to prevent or mitigate the devastating effects that water damage can have.

RECOGNIZED AND TRUSTED WATER DAMAGE EXPERTS

If you find that your office, warehouse, restaurant or other commercial property in Patchogue, Coram, Farmingville, Holbrook and Centereach has experienced water or sewage damage, from broken plumbing, flooding, roof leaks or other types of water damage the most effective solution is to hire a restoration company like SERVPRO to begin the cleanup, repair, and restoration process. When your WNY home or business suffers a water damage, understanding what type of water you are dealing with is critical to ensuring proper cleanup. We offer 24-hour services, excellent customer service, and expedient remediation work that return your home to a safe, sanitary condition.

THERE ARE 3 BASIC CATEGORIES OF WATER

Category 1:
Clean water originates from a sanitary source such as a broken pipe, or other water source; rainwater is also considered clean and poses no substantial risk from dermal, ingestion, or inhalation exposure. However, it may not always remain clean after it meets other surfaces or materials.

Category 2:
Gray water is used to classify slightly contaminated water and has the potential to cause discomfort or sickness if contacted or consumed by humans. It may contain potentially unsafe levels of microorganisms or nutrients for microorganisms, as well as other organic or inorganic matter (chemical or biological).

Category 3:
Black water is highly contaminated and filled with pathogenic, toxigenic or other harmful agents. Such water sources may carry silt, organic matter, pesticides, heavy metals, regulated materials, or toxic organic substances. Black water is typically caused by sewage damage, flooding or any type of natural disaster; Black water should always be handled by trained professionals.

THE 4 PRIMARY CLASSIFICATIONS OF WATER DAMAGE

  • Class 1 is the least amount of water, absorption and evaporation. It affects only part of a room or area, or larger areas containing materials that have absorbed minimal moisture.  Little or no wet carpet and/or cushion is present.
  • Class 2 involves a large amount of water, absorption and evaporation. It affects at least an entire room of carpet and cushion (pad). Water has wicked up walls less than 24 inches.  There is moisture remaining in structural materials and substructure soil.
  • Class 3 involves the greatest amount of water, absorption and evaporation. Water may have come from overhead.  Ceilings, walls, insulation, carpet, cushions and subfloor in virtually all the entire area is saturated.
  • Class 4 relates to specialty drying situations. Wet materials with very low permeance/porosity (eg. hardwood, plaster, brick, concrete, light-weight concrete and stone). Typically, there are deep pockets of saturation, which require very low specific humidity. These types of losses may require longer drying times and special methods.

We have the knowledge, experience and proper equipment to locate any hidden moisture lurking out of sight and clean up water damage of any size and get it done right the first time.

Moisture sensors, which are used to detect moisture in carpets, baseboards and walls. We have moisture meters that we use to test the actual moisture content of materials. The meters allow our technicians to accurately monitor the drying process. Our team also has thermohygrometers on hand to measure temperature and relative humidity, which ensures techs can calculate and create an environment that is most conducive to drying.

Choosing a Professional Remediation Company

3/13/2019 (Permalink)

Why Call SERVPRO?

Imagine, you come home from work, running errands or even from vacation, only to find your basement is flooded! Your initial response may be to try and fix the issue yourself, but before you do, check our “Three types of contaminated water” article. If you have grey or black water, it is highly recommended you contact a professional ASAP, and remember, clean water can turn into grey water in less then 24 hours.

So, do you call your general contractor or a disaster restoration company? There are a few important differences between contractors and professional Water Restoration Companies. As a professional Restoration Company, we try to restore, rather than replace, whenever possible.

Most contractors are not certified in drying and cleaning water damage to industry standards, so they tend to replace everything that is affected. This will often will include all flooring, walls, cabinets and even furniture. SERVPRO technicians are certified in drying and cleaning water damage to industry standards. We will not remove materials unless it is necessary. The average time to dry is 3 days, this prevents further interruption to your daily life and saves you money. We try to mitigate the water damage and restore when possible. Restoring your home is more cost efficient than replacing materials in your home.

Important Tips for Choosing a Biohazard Cleanup Service

3/5/2019 (Permalink)

Always Choose a Trained Professional

  • Because it’s traumatic: No one should have to deal with the personal impact of cleaning up after the traumatic loss of a loved one. A professional SERVPRO can get a situation cleaned up quickly, compassionately and discreetly.
  • Because it’s safer: Federal regulations classify all human and animal remains, including blood, urine, feces, vomit and bodily fluids, as biohazards. This is because they have the potential of carrying life-threatening pathogens such as Hepatitis B and C, AIDS, HIV, MRSA, Tuberculosis and many more. The safe cleanup and removal of biohazardous materials involves extensive analysis and detailed work, and the use of state-of-the-art cleaning and odor removal technologies.

Licensed Bonded & Insured

  • It is important to use licensed professionals because they conduct safe cleanup, removal and disposal of biohazardous waste. Additional considerations include being registered and compliant with OSHA and FEMA, federal agencies that oversee disasters and workplace safety. Cleanup crews will be coming into your home or the home of your loved one, so be sure the professional you choose is bonded and insured.

Will Work with Insurance Companies

  • In most cases, insurance will cover much or all of the cost of traumatic even cleanup. You can minimize or eliminate your out-of-pocket expenses by working with licensed and bonded professionals such as SERVPRO of Eastern Niagara County who will deal directly with insurance companies, saving you one more headache in this already difficult process.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

What Water Does to Structural Elements of WNY Homes

With loss incidents that occur within your home, you have a finite timeline to correct the situation before irreparable damages occur. With water loss especially, these damages can begin almost instantaneously from the moment of exposure. Finding the right team with the tools to help is not as complicated as it might appear to be.

A primary focus for homeowners contending with substantial water loss incidents in their home is a fast response for water removal services. Our SERVPRO team of professionals have the tools and expertise to make a difference in preserving elements of your home by removing the water from the premises fast. Our 24-hour response team ensures that our highly-trained technicians remain available to any customer that could require our services any time of the day.

Within a few moments from exposure to water, elements like drywall begin to saturate and absorb the liquid. From the baseboards, this moisture wicks up the wall. This continued saturation can bloat and degrade this material after only twenty-four hours. Within a few days, microbial growth and potential biohazardous conditions could result. Taking care of the solution is finding the team, like our SERVPRO professionals, that respond immediately to the emergency.

Part of our effective mitigation approach to preserving the structural elements and the contents of your home is our determination to have advanced technology and equipment to remove water quickly from affected areas. Extraction plays a significant role in our mitigation practices, and tools like our gas-powered pumps and handheld extraction wands can make short work of this excess. We utilize thermal imagery to check the effectiveness of drying the area and to show our SERVPRO technicians where further attention is necessary to remove threatening moisture pockets.
