Reduce Fire Risk: Keep Your Dryer Lint-Free

11/5/2019 (Permalink)

Dryer Vent A little lint in the wrong place can cause a fire hazard

Don’t you love the convenience of washing and drying your own clothes at home? The time, money, and energy you save is great. But SERVPRO of Eastern Niagara County knows the handy convenience of a home dryer can turn into a fire risk.

Dryers Cause 14,000+ Fires
According to Consumer Reports, every year, firefighters across the country respond to about 14,630 home fires caused by clothes dryers. One-third of these fires is caused by an accumulation of lint, which means that not cleaning out your dryer vent can set you up for a dangerous situation. This is far more serious than the decrease in drying efficiency caused by partially blocking your dryer's duct work.

To avoid this risk and stop the build-up of lint fire, properly maintain your dryer. Regular maintenance means frequent cleaning and may require professional help when necessary.

Check For Lint Every Time
Every time you use your clothes dryer check for lint. Most dryers have a lint filter or screen that’s easy to access and clean by hand. It may take 10 seconds to clean it. Remember, lint is very dry and combustible. A fire can happen easily if the lint hiding inside your dryer ignites.

Do go beyond just cleaning the lint screen. Clean every part of the dryer where lint can accumulate. This means:
•    Removing lint from filter after every load.
•    Cleaning the pipe that vents your dryer to the outside once every three months.
•    Scrubbing the lint filter twice a year to remove buildup.
•    Replacing accordion-style ducts (these are risky because they can sag and allow lint to build up at low points and trap lint in their ridges. Use a rigid metal duct instead.)
•    Using duct connectors and metal clamps (or foil tape) to join sections of duct. Avoid sheet metal screws because they can catch lint and cause buildup.
•    Calling for professional cleaning if your dry times become longer.

Fire remediation experts advise cleaning the whole machine to reduce the chance of fire.

Check Your Dryer’s Ventilation System, Too

Your dryer’s indoor vent should be inspected before the dryer is installed to make sure that it’s not damaged. Protect the outdoor vent from weather and small creatures that enjoy making a home inside of it. That usually means covering the outdoor vent so that the vent stays open when the dryer is on (so that lint can escape) but closes when the dryer isn’t being used. By taking the entire ventilation system into account, you are less likely to experience a fire due to excess lint.

Fire Risk Assessment

We can do a full house fire risk assessment for you. We can examine your dryer, the ventilation system, and other typical home situations that increase a fire risk.

Carpet Cleaning ?

4/22/2019 (Permalink)

Your dog has ruined your rug, your child your carpets and now your thinking about making that vaunted $150.00 carpet steamer purchase. Have you thought about how much that purchase may actually cost you? Below are 3 of the most common carpet cleaning mistakes that can happen to an untrained cleaner.

1) Over-Shampooing

2) Over-Wetting

3) Failing to protect furniture from wet carpet

lets break these down so that its easy to understand what each means.

Over-Shampooing- Occurs when to much chemical agent is added to the water mix used to clean the carpet. Many agents have oily residues that can build up and actually make carpets worse. They can cause carpets to become dirt magnets.

Over-Wetting- Occurs when too much water is use on the carpet. When too much water is used and soaks into the carpet backing as well as the padding. This can cause mold and mildew and lead to carpet replacement due to the smell that it causes. It literally sours your carpet.

Failing to protect furniture from wet carpet- Simply put, most furniture has dyes and stains that coupled with water bleeds. This bleeding on carpets leads to a stain that is almost impossible to get out of the carpet. Not to mention too much water and furniture can cause furniture to warp and loose its integrity too.

When deciding on whether to clean your carpets yourself or let a professional so it for you ask yourself is it worth it. Professional carpet cleaning companies like SERVPRO of Eastern Niagara County are equipped with the equipment and training needed to get those carpets looking right the first time.

We have high powered truck mounts and industry leading cleaning methods that work. Plus we move your furniture for you too and save you time. Trust your carpet cleaning to the professionals.

Why you should clean your airducts?

9/28/2018 (Permalink)

For many people, indoor air pollution is a growing concern. The air in a home generally circulates five to seven times a day through the HVAC air ducts. During these circulations, it carries the dust and debris of everyday life. For this reason, it’s important to get an air duct cleaning.>

While your furnace filter will catch most of the dust and debris, neglect, remodeling projects, or shoddy duct installation can lead to a buildup of undesirable debris inside your air ducts which will threaten the efficiency of the system. You’ll know you’re in need of an air duct cleaning because clogs of dust, cobwebs, debris, or noticeable particles will blow out of the supply registers. Other possible signs will be visible mold inside the furnaces of ducts or rodent droppings and deceased insects inside the ducts.

Having the professionals at SERVPRO clean your HVAC air ducts will ensure the removal of the dust that’s accumulated so it won’t spread into the household. It will also ease the airflow and increase your system’s efficiency by as much as 40 percent.

Duct Cleaning

Air duct cleaning is the process of cleaning the various heating and cooling system components of a forced air system that includes supply and return air ducts and registers, grilles and diffusers, heat exchangers heating and cooling coils, condensate drain pans or drip pans, fan motor and fan housing, and air handling unit housing. If the system is not properly installed, maintained, and operated, these components can potentially become contaminated with particles of dust, pollen, and other debris. The existence of moisture can cause the growth of mold which can cause health problem to the building’s occupants. These mold spores have the potential to be released into the living space. Other contaminants can cause building occupants to have an allergic reaction or other symptoms.

If you’re having your air ducts cleaned, it’s important to have all of the components cleaned. Failure to do so could result in one contaminated component re-contaminating the entire system which would negate all potential benefits of the cleaning. Professionals that are hired to handle the job will bring specialized tools that helps them to dislodge dirt and other debris in the air ducts. Then they’ll vacuum the dirt and debris out of the ducts with a high-powered vacuum cleaner. They may also propose the application of chemical biocides to the inside of the ducts and other system components.

Do You Need Your Ducts Cleaned?

There are several reasons why you may need the air ducts cleaned in you home. If the occupants of the building are experiencing unusual or unexplained symptoms or illnesses and you think it might be related to your home environment, you should have your air ducts cleaned. You should also make sure to consult a doctor about the symptoms.

Over time, air ducts will collect dust and debris so it’s a good idea to have them cleaned occasionally. It’s also important that you use the professionals at SERVPRO to avoid other potential problems. If the cleaning is not done properly, the cleaning could cause even more indoor air problems. An example of this includes using an inadequate vacuum collection system which could end up releasing more of the dust, dirt, and other contaminants than if it had just been left alone. If the service provider hired to clean the air ducts is careless or has been inadequately trained, he or she could cause damage to the ducts or the heating and cooling system. This could force costly repairs or replacements.

There has been some research to suggests that having your heating and cooling system components cleaned can improve the efficiency of the system which could result in it having a longer operating life. This research has also suggested that due to operating a higher efficiency, cleaning may result in energy and maintenance cost savings.

If your heating and cooling system hasn’t been cleaned in a while, it may be time to have it done. Ridding your HVAC air ducts of dust and debris can prevent potentially harmful growth like mold from accumulating in the ducts. If your air ducts and heating and cooling system hasn’t been attended to in a while, call the certified professionals at SERVPRO to handle the job.

Spring time allergies

4/13/2018 (Permalink)

Spring is in the air all around and if you live there you know that with it comes all the allergens and irritants that cause sneezing, sniffling, dripping noses and stuffy heads. Keep your nose cleaner and your head cleaner by having the allergens removed from your home or office.

What Areas Are Most Important to Clean?

In your home or office, the carpet, ducts and upholstery are the largest collectors of allergy producers. Just by making sure that they are consistently and professionally cleaned you can reduce a lot of the major contributors to your allergies.

Carpet Cleaning - Even with regular vacuuming your carpet and padding can collect allergens. Having a professional carpet cleaning company clean your carpets can help drastically.

Duct Cleaning - Even with frequently changing your air duct filters dust and other allergens can get caught between your air conditioning unit and your air vents. While you can make sure to change your filters on a regular basis, it is suggested to have your ducts cleaned once a year at a minimum.

Upholstery Cleaning - Think about how long you keep your couch and how often you get it cleaned. Even vacuuming your couch only removes so much. We suggest having your upholstered furniture cleaned at least a couple of times a year to remove excess dirt.

You know SERVPRO of Eastern Niagara County as a leader in Fire and Water Cleanup and Restoration, but our professional residential cleaning services can also make a dirty carpet "Like it never even happened."
